David – Unable to receive benefits due to employer P45 error

David came to us for help following the loss of his job due to health problems. He had subsequently received an incorrect Universal Credit (UC) calculation due to his employer stating that he was being paid, when in fact he had received his P45.

As a result, money had been deducted from his monthly UC payments, leaving him unable to pay his mortgage, direct debits and phone bill. He found himself unable to contact anyone for help and he had no food or funds for gas and electricity meters, with his next income not due for 10 days.

Fortunately, David was able to visit his local Citizens Advice Basingstoke Food Bank drop-in clinic, where our Adviser was able to provide him with a food voucher worth £36, a National Databank O2 SIM mobile phone card worth £90 and a Fuel Bank Foundation referral worth £30. Our adviser referred David to the Energy Advice, Home and Well and New Forest Debt teams for extra support on his finances, together with a referral to the Council for help with his Council Tax bills. In addition, a consecutive Food Bank voucher was organised for David for the following week.
