John lives alone in a rented property and is seeking employment. His monthly income totals £1,125.10 per month (including £750 in Universal Credit each month and £345 in PIP every four weeks). His rent costs £424 per month and he owes £26,000 in debts.

John has complex long-term medical issues, meaning he constantly struggles with limited mobility and pain, mostly caused by a historic industrial accident which injured his spine. This had left him struggling to afford food and he could only afford to eat for three days of the week.

John was referred to our Home and Well Team, which enables vulnerable people to remain safely and independently in their own homes. Our Adviser issued John with a voucher for Basingstoke Foodbank, while our Debt Adviser carried out an in-depth financial assessment to help him manage his money. It was noted that John would benefit from additional mobility aids at home and he was given the contact details for occupational self-referral to help make life easier. Our Adviser recommended that John contact his Universal Credit work coach regarding ‘Limited Capability for Work and Work Related Activity’ as he may be eligible for an additional payment. John was also provided with information on the ‘Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit’ so that he could consider making a further claim.

To help with his bills at home, John was already registered on the Priority Services Register for water and energy, but our Adviser provided information on social tariffs to help reduce his broadband and mobile phone bills. Grants are also currently being investigated to replace John’s broken oven (due to his mobility he requires a higher wall unit to avoid having to constantly bend down). John was also referred to our Energy Team for energy saving tips and access to grants to help with the cost of living. John has been encouraged to return if he needs any further assistance.
