Citizens Advice Basingstoke seeking new premises
Citizens Advice Basingstoke is a local charity, providing free, confidential and impartial advice to help local people put food on the table, stay warm and keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, the charity has been forced to look for new premises, following termination of its lease by Hampshire County Council.
Tony Curtis, Chair of Citizens Advice Basingstoke said: “We would prefer to stay in our current location in the Discovery Centre in Festival Place but, despite on-going discussions with the County Council, we are having actively to seek new premises. This may necessitate a short-term solution and then a further move. We will try and minimise disruption for our clients and we are sending out a ‘plea for help’ to local people and businesses who can help us to remain in Basingstoke town centre, to continue our projects and services helping local people facing real hardship, particularly during these difficult economic times. All of this would be unnecessary if the County Council would allow us to stay in our current premises.”
Many clients at Citizens Advice Basingstoke have become overwhelmed by their problems and have reached desperation point by the time they seek help. They may have become too unwell to work, find themselves caring for a sick or disabled relative or find they are suddenly at risk of being evicted from their home. A highly skilled team of staff and volunteers provide people with somewhere to turn during a crisis. The charity provides a lifeline for local people struggling to navigate the complexities of life, whatever their circumstances involve, from benefits and housing issues to debt and employment disputes. Clients receive help in-person, by telephone or by email and last year 9,857 clients were supported with 19,414 issues, with income gains worth £2.1 million, thanks to expert advice provided.
87% of clients report outstanding satisfaction with Citizens Advice Basingstoke, saying recently that they would recommend the service they have received.
