Alida is single with no children and lives in a 3-bedroom property rented from a Housing Association. She is vulnerable, with a learning disability, severe depression and struggles to stand for long periods of time. She receives £369 in Universal Credit and £407 Personal Independence Payment. Alida is struggling to pay her day-to-day bills and contacted us for advice on her energy as her supplier had put her on the wrong tariff and she had an outstanding electricity bill of over £200. Her gas had been disconnected due to an outstanding debt of £40.

A full benefits check was carried out to check that Alida was receiving everything she was entitled to. Our adviser provided information to help save money on bills where possible, and Alida was given the information to apply to the Cost of Living Assistance Fund, together with details on applying for a food voucher. A £30 fuel bank voucher was also issued. Our energy adviser together with Alida also contacted the energy company by phone a number of times to discuss the incorrect charges, outstanding gas and electricity debts, a repayment plan for the debts and a new pre-payment meter card as the existing one did not work.
