Denise – Escaping domestic abuse but unable to stay warm in new home
Denise lives with her young daughter Charlotte after they needed to find somewhere else to live due to domestic abuse from her former partner. Denise brought her new house outright, but has had to give up her job in order to care for Charlotte who has severe health and medical needs. Denise was unable to afford the cost of a survey when she purchased her new home and got in touch for advice on insulating the property after finding it very cold. She had previously been told that she was ineligible for an insulation grant. The house is quite old and extremely cold during winter and our adviser was able to provide Denise with information on two new energy grants to follow up, one of which confirmed that Denise’s home is eligible for insulation. Denise also received a grant of £147 from the Household Support Fund to help with her energy costs.
“We stayed in bed last winter to keep warm and it was very stressful and depressing and tearful. I really can’t thank Citizens Advice Basingstoke enough for making our lives so much nicer. My daughter and I are so very grateful.” Denise
