Peter - Struggling to pay everyday bills

Peter - Struggling to pay everyday bills

Peter is 86 and lives alone in a privately rented property in a village on the outskirts of Basingstoke. He receives full housing benefit, council tax reduction and £93.85 per week in state pension. He struggles with his health, having had heart failure, while his mobility is extremely poor due to constant pain in his right leg. Life is extremely difficult for Peter as he tries to carry out simple tasks such as putting on a pair of socks or stepping into the bath.

Peter does not have any family living nearby and does not have a carer coming in to help. He is in discussions with his landlord for his flat to be adapted to make it easier for him to remain in his home.

Peter had been living off savings from when he worked abroad in a self-employed role, but all of his savings are now completely depleted. In early November, Peter called us in desperation for advice on his finances, together with assistance in applying for a Blue Badge.

After a thorough investigation, our expert older people’s adviser was able to make a successful claim for pension credit on behalf of Peter, which has topped up his weekly income to £201.05, making a real difference to his finances.

Peter was also advised to apply for Attendance Allowance, which provides extra money for people with a long-term physical or mental condition or disability. Following straightforward instructions, Peter was able to successfully submit his claims for both Attendance Allowance and also his Blue Badge.
